Futon Slipcovers – Designing your own futon cover lets you get exactly what you want. It can also be less expensive than buying a cover made in advance. You will need to carefully measure your futon and have proof that your cover is still fitting as you sew together, but when you have finished, you will have a custom made futon cover designed exactly to your liking.
Decide what kind of look you want for the futon. What room will it be in? Do you frequently sit or sleep in it? Measure the futon. Measure the length of the upper seam of the lower seam. Measure the seam width from one side to the other. Add one inch on each side and on the top and bottom for the margins. These measurements, as well as forming a pattern for your cover, will determine how much fabric you need to buy.

Pick your fabric. Anyone can go to a fabric store, or they can take a shortcut and use two flat sheets. If you choose the latter, you have the advantage of being able to buy leaves that come in exactly the same size as your futon – twin, full, queen or king. You do not have to cut them as you can with store-bought fabric yards. You can also use a duvet cover made in advance as a futon cover, which eliminates having to sew on all. Depending on how your futon mattress is thick, however, the duvet cover may be too tight.
